Meilisearch is a search engine written in Rust by Meili, a company based in Paris, and it is built for the search bar rather than the data warehouse. It answers as the user types, tolerates typos by default, and handles filters, facets, sorting and geosearch through a small REST API. Official client libraries cover JavaScript, Python, PHP, Go, Ruby and more, and InstantSearch front-end widgets work with it through an adapter.
Recent releases added AI-powered hybrid search: you configure an embedder per index, and Meilisearch blends keyword ranking with vector similarity using a semanticRatio you control per query. A search engine has to be reachable by every visitor of your site, keep its index on disk between restarts and be protected by keys, which is exactly the part a laptop or a free-tier container does badly. Your index lives on persistent storage that is backed up.
Meilisearch hosting plans
Every plan is a dedicated single-tenant instance with NVMe storage, nightly off-box backups, TLS and managed patching. Quarterly, semi-annual and annual terms are discounted at checkout. Model tokens are not included — you bring your own key.

- MEILI_ENV=production with a generated MEILI_MASTER_KEY, so the search preview UI is off and keys are enforced
- Default search and admin keys handed over, plus scoped keys if you need them
- MEILI_SCHEDULE_SNAPSHOT for regular consistent snapshots
- MEILI_MAX_INDEXING_MEMORY set below the plan’s RAM so indexing does not starve search
- MEILI_NO_ANALYTICS to switch off upstream telemetry, if you prefer
- Embedder settings for hybrid search pointed at your OpenAI key or an Ollama plan
Which plan fits
Starter (2 GB) is enough for a docs site or catalogue of tens of thousands of records. Plus (4 GB) suits a shop or app with hundreds of thousands of documents and frequent updates. Pro (8 GB) is for large indexes, many facets, or hybrid search where stored vectors add to the footprint.
The honest limits
Indexing large batches is CPU- and memory-heavy and runs slower on the Starter plan, although search stays responsive. Sharding across machines is an Enterprise Edition feature and is not part of what we host.
