Chatwoot brings live chat, email, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Telegram into one inbox, with teams, assignment rules, canned responses, a help centre and reporting. The AI features — reply suggestions and summaries — run against a model key you supply.

Self-hosting matters here for two reasons: support conversations are some of the most sensitive data a company holds, and per-agent pricing on hosted desks grows faster than the team does. Upstream lists 2 cores and 4 GB as the floor and 8 GB for production, so our plans start at 4 GB and the larger tier is sized for a busy team.

Every plan is a dedicated single-tenant instance with NVMe storage, nightly off-box backups, TLS and managed patching. Quarterly, semi-annual and annual terms are discounted at checkout. Model tokens are not included — you bring your own key.

The official production compose: the chatwoot/chatwoot image running as a Rails web process and a Sidekiq worker, PostgreSQL 16 with pgvector, and Redis.

Which plan fits

Plus (4 GB, 4 vCPU) meets the upstream minimum and suits a team of a handful of agents with moderate chat and email volume. Pro (8 GB, 6 vCPU) is for larger teams, several busy channels and years of conversation history with attachments.

The honest limits

Captain, SLA policies, SAML SSO and other Enterprise Edition features need a paid Chatwoot licence and are not included. WhatsApp and Instagram channels also require your own Meta business accounts.

Which AI features work on the community edition?

The OpenAI integration under Settings, Applications gives reply suggestions, Improve with AI and conversation summaries using your own API key. Captain, Chatwoot’s autonomous AI agent and copilot, requires a paid Enterprise Edition licence on self-hosted installs, so it is not part of this plan.

How do I set up email inboxes?

Outgoing mail is sent through SMTP settings such as SMTP_ADDRESS, SMTP_USERNAME and MAILER_SENDER_EMAIL. Incoming email can come through IMAP on each inbox, or through forwarding to MAILER_INBOUND_EMAIL_DOMAIN. We configure the SMTP relay; you connect the mailboxes.

Can agents sign in with Google or Microsoft?

Chatwoot supports Google OAuth sign-in through GOOGLE_OAUTH_CLIENT_ID and GOOGLE_OAUTH_CLIENT_SECRET, and Microsoft credentials through AZURE_APP_ID for Outlook email inboxes. SAML single sign-on is an Enterprise Edition feature and is not included.

Can I connect a chatbot before a human takes over?

Yes. Agent Bots receive conversation events by webhook and reply through the API, handing off to a human when needed. Chatwoot publishes a Rasa example, and any bot platform or workflow tool that can take a webhook can drive one.

What gets backed up?

Conversations, contacts and settings are in PostgreSQL, and attachments are in the storage volume unless you switch ACTIVE_STORAGE_SERVICE to S3-compatible storage. Both the database dump and the storage volume go into the nightly off-box backup.
