Windmill is an open-source developer platform from Windmill Labs, released as an AGPLv3 Community Edition with a commercial Enterprise Edition alongside. You write ordinary scripts in Python, TypeScript, Go, Bash, SQL and several other languages, and Windmill infers a form from the function signature, stores secrets as typed resources, and runs the script on a pool of workers with retries, schedules, webhooks and logs. Scripts then compose into flows with branches, loops and error handlers, and a low-code app builder puts internal tools on top.

Its engine is written in Rust and uses PostgreSQL as both the database and the job queue, which keeps the architecture small: API servers and workers are stateless, and everything durable lives in Postgres. Schedules only fire if something is running at the scheduled time, and webhooks only work at a stable public address, so Windmill is the kind of tool that has to live on a server rather than a developer’s machine.

Every plan is a dedicated single-tenant instance with NVMe storage, nightly off-box backups, TLS and managed patching. Quarterly, semi-annual and annual terms are discounted at checkout. Model tokens are not included — you bring your own key.

How we run Windmill

We follow Windmill’s official docker-compose: the windmill_server container (API and UI on port 8000), a default worker group and a native worker for lightweight jobs, the windmill-extra container for editor autocompletion, Caddy in front, and PostgreSQL as both database and job queue.

Which plan fits

Plus (4 GB) runs the server, PostgreSQL and a small worker pool, which is enough for scheduled jobs, webhooks and internal apps used by a few people. Pro (8 GB) gives room for more workers running at once and for Python jobs with heavy dependencies such as pandas. Upstream’s own compose file allows 2 GB per worker, which is a useful guide to how many parallel heavy jobs each plan can take.

The honest limits

This is the AGPLv3 Community Edition, so the user, SSO and workspace caps above apply and Enterprise features such as audit logs and SAML are not included. Jobs run on the instance’s CPU, so heavy data work competes with everything else on the plan.

What are the limits of the free Community Edition?

The Community Edition is free and self-hostable, but Windmill’s pricing page caps it at 50 users, 10 of them with SSO, 3 workspaces and 4 groups, with job run details kept for up to 30 days. Audit logs, SAML and SCIM, git sync for more than two users and some advanced triggers need an Enterprise licence.

Can I move scripts from my own Windmill install?

Yes. The wmill CLI pulls a workspace from your current instance into a local folder of scripts, flows, apps and resource definitions, and pushes it to the new one. Secrets are skipped by default for safety, so you either re-enter them once or use wmill’s instance migration, which moves them still encrypted.

How do I call AI models from Windmill?

Write a script that calls the provider’s SDK, whether that is OpenAI, Anthropic or an Ollama endpoint, store the API key as a Windmill resource, and reference it as an argument. The same script can then run on a schedule, from a webhook or as a step in a flow, with retries if the provider times out.

What lives in the database, and what does the backup cover?

Nearly everything: scripts and their versions, flows, apps, schedules, resources, variables, users and job history are stored in PostgreSQL, with secrets encrypted. Our nightly off-box backup captures that database, which is what you need to restore a Windmill instance. Worker dependency caches are rebuilt automatically and are not needed for a restore.

Which languages and package managers are supported?

Python with dependencies resolved through uv, TypeScript on Bun or Deno, Go, Bash, PowerShell, PHP, Rust, C#, SQL and GraphQL, among others. Dependencies are declared in the script itself or a lockfile and cached on the worker, so the first run of a new script is slower than the ones after it.
